Not seeing much time on offense
Dwelley logged eight of the Falcons' 73 snaps on offense in Sunday's 34-14 loss to the Seahawks.
Analysis: Dwelley and fellow backup tight end Charlie Woerner (11 snaps) saw limited playing time behind starter Kyle Pitts (55 snaps), a trend that's likely to persist moving forward, especially when the Falcons fall into a negative game script. Though he should continue to suit up on most game days due to his blocking skills and ability to contribute on special teams, Dwelley is unlikely to draw many looks in the passing game from quarterback Kirk Cousins. Dwelley has yet to earn a target through…read more

Expected to be block-first TE
Dwelley made the Falcons' initial 53-man roster Tuesday, Terrin Waack of the Falcons' official site reports.
Analysis: Dwelley and Charlie Woerner signed similar contracts this offseason and will start the campaign as backups to Kyle Pitts. Dwelley played sparingly on offense in San Francisco, but he's a stout blocker and will be involved in Atlanta's running game, per Josh Kendall of The Athletic.

Finds new home in Atlanta
The Falcons signed Dwelley (ankle) on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Dwelley finished last season on injured reserve after sustaining an ankle injury, but it now seems as if he's moved past the issue. After spending the first six seasons of his NFL career with the 49ers, the 29-year-old tight end has agreed to terms with the Falcons. Across his last three seasons, Dwelley has appeared in 41 games and made two starts, catching eight of his 12 targets for 168 yards and two touchdowns. Despite his underwhelming offensive production, the San Diego product has been a…read more

Lands on IR
The 49ers placed Dwelley (ankle) to the injured reserve Saturday.
Analysis: Dwelley sustained a high-ankle sprain in Week 13 against the Eagles. He hasn't managed to suit up since, and with his placement on IR, his season is officially over since the 49ers have a max of four games left. Dwelley had one catch on two targets for 12 yards over 12 games this season, operating mostly as a pass-blocking tight end and special-teams player.

Out for Sunday
Dwelley (ankle) is out for Sunday's game against the Rams, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The veteran tight end hasn't played since Week 13. Charlie Woerner and Brayden Willis should see plenty of action Sunday against the Rams with the Niners expected to rest several key starters, including George Kittle.

Out again
Dwelley (ankle) will not play in Sunday's matchup with the Commanders.
Analysis: Dwelley's absence will mark his fourth straight due to an ankle injury. As a result, Charlie Woerner and Brayden Willis figure to continue as depth tight end options behind George Kittle. Dwelley's next chance to suit up will come in the 49ers' regular-season finale versus the Rams.

Missing third straight game Monday
Dwelley (ankle) has been ruled out for Monday's game against the Ravens, Cam Inman of The Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Dwelley will miss a third consecutive game as a result of his ankle injury. The backup tight end's next opportunity to suit up will be Week 17 against the Commanders. Charlie Woerner and Brayden Willis will continue to fill depth roles behind George Kittle against the Ravens.

Misses another practice
Dwelley (ankle) did not practice Friday, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Dwelley has missed San Francisco's past two games due to an ankle injury, and his chance of playing Monday against Baltimore isn't strong given that he has sat out the team's first two practices this week. In fact, the veteran tight end hasn't been able to practice at all since getting hurt Week 13 versus Philadelphia. Brayden Willis could continue to see a handful of snaps on offense Monday if Dwelley is sidelined again.

Dwelley (ankle) did not participate in practice Thursday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Missing another game
Dwelley (ankle) won't play in Sunday's game against the Cardinals, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Dwelley is dealing with a high-ankle sprain, and he wasn't able to practice at all this week. He also missed last Sunday's win over the Seahawks, giving Brayden Willis the chance to see his first action since Week 4. Dwelley's Week 15 absence won't set off many alarms in fantasy circles, as he's made just one catch (on two targets) over 12 games this season.

Won't play Sunday
Dwelley (ankle) has been ruled out ahead of Sunday's game against the Seahawks, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Dwelley sustained a right high-ankle sprain in the 49ers' Week 13 win over the Eagles. He was unable to participate in practice all week and is set to miss his first game of the year. In Dwelley's absence, Brayden Willis is set to step into the No. 3 tight end role behind George Kittle and Charlie Woerner.

Misses practice Wednesday
Dwelley (ankle) did not practice Wednesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Dwelley's absence from the practice field Wednesday was expected, as he suffered a right high-ankle sprain in Sunday's win over Philadelphia and is expected to miss some time. The veteran tight end has worked primarily on special teams this season, and he's logged more than four offensive snaps just once since Week 5. As such, his likely absence against Seattle this coming Sunday shouldn't have a significant impact on San Francisco's offensive game plan.

Nursing high ankle sprain
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Dwelley sustained a right high-ankle sprain in Sunday's 42-19 win over the Eagles and is expected to miss time, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Dwelley has just one reception for 12 yards on two targets this season, but he's been active for all 12 of San Francisco's games and fills a key role as a blocker and on special teams. Assuming the ankle sprain results in Dwelley missing this Sunday's game against the Seahawks, seventh-round rookie Brayden Willis could suit up as the 49ers' No. 3 tight end behind George Kittle and Charlie Woerner.

Returning to San Francisco
Dwelley re-signed with the 49ers on Monday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Dwelley will remain in San Francisco, where he's spent the entirety of his career since signing there as an undrafted free agent in 2018. The 28-year-old played in 12 games last season and recorded three catches for 105 yards and a touchdown. Dwelley should provide solid depth behind George Kittle as well as adding value on special teams next season.

Serves backup role in 2022
Dwelley had three receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown across 12 active regular-season games in 2022.
Analysis: Dwelley was able to produce a couple of big plays while George Kittle recovered from an injury to start the season, but he ultimately was limited to special teams for the majority of the year. The 27-year-old will become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, but he is unlikely to land in a situation that warrants fantasy consideration after posting forgettable totals through the first five years of his pro career.

Dwelley (coach's decision) is inactive Sunday against the Cardinals, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Healthy scratch again
Dwelley (coach's decision) is inactive Sunday against the Buccaneers, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Dwelley will be a healthy scratch for the second consecutive week. The 27-year-old seems to be firmly behind Charlie Woerner and Tyler Kroft on the team's positional depth chart as backups to George Kittle, which will keep him sidelined again.

Just six snaps Week 12
Dwelley went without a target while playing six of the 49ers' 70 snaps on offense in Sunday's 13-0 win over the Saints.
Analysis: Dwelley served as the 49ers' No. 3 tight end Sunday, playing six snaps, while starter George Kittle played 68 and top backup Charlie Woerner played 17. Woerner is regarded as a superior blocker, so expect him to continue to play ahead of Dwelley while Kittle is healthy.

Part of big splash play
Dwelley caught his lone target for 56 yards in Sunday's 31-14 win over the Rams.
Analysis: Dwelley -- normally a backup tight end -- played most of his 19 offensive snaps at fullback in place of Kyle Juszczyk (thumb). The 27-year-old saw only one target, but he made it count by running a crisp wheel route out of the backfield for a huge gain. With the 49ers entering a bye week, there's a good chance Juszczyk returns before the team's next game against the Chargers on Sunday, Nov. 13. Dwelley currently isn't a roster-worthy fantasy option.

Back in full Friday
Dwelley (ribs) practiced in full Friday, Lindsey Pallares of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Dwelley sat out practice last week with a ribs injury, but he ultimately played through the issue in Monday's 24-9 win over the Rams. Although the 235-pounder failed to practice again Thursday, his ability to participate in full Friday indicates he's no longer in danger of missing Sunday's contest against the Panthers. With George Kittle reclaiming the No. 1 tight end spot for San Francisco, Dwelley has seen a combined nine offensive snaps over the 49ers' last two games.

Ready to go Monday
Dwelley (ribs) will play Monday against the Rams, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Dwelley didn't practice last week until Saturday, but he's feeling healthy enough to suit up against the Rams. The 27-year-old only played four offensive snaps last week and never saw a target in George Kittle's return. He's a dart throw at best for fantasy purposes, even in DFS single-game contests, as long as Kittle remains healthy.

Questionable for Week 4
Dwelley (ribs) practiced in limited fashion Saturday and is questionable for Monday's game against the Rams, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Sits out Friday's practice
Dwelley (ribs) didn't practice Friday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Dwelley has missed back-to-back practices ahead of Monday's divisional clash with the Rams due to a rib injury. The extent of the issue remains unclear, but he'll have just one more practice before the team makes a decision on his status for Week 4. With George Kittle back, Dwelley played just four offensive snaps in Week 3, so his potential absence wouldn't be a significant blow to the 49ers offense.

Dwelley (ribs) didn't practice Thursday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Dwelley sat out the team's first practice ahead of Monday's showdown with the Rams due to a rib issue. The extent of the injury remains unclear, but he'll have two more opportunities to practice before the team needs to make a decision on his status. With George Kittle back in the mix, Dwelley saw just four offensive snaps in Week 3, so his potential absence wouldn't be major loss to San Francisco's offense.

Makes impressive touchdown catch
Dwelley caught his lone target for a 38-yard touchdown in Sunday's 27-7 win over the Seahawks.
Analysis: George Kittle (groin) wasn't able to suit up, and Tyler Kroft (knee) suffered an injury, so Dwelley took over as the 49ers' top receiving option at the tight end position. Seasoned backup Jimmy Garoppolo hit the veteran tight end in stride, and Dwelley fully extended to cross the plane for his first touchdown of the season. One catch as backup
Dwelley caught one of two targets for 11 yards in Sunday's 19-10 loss to Chicago.
Analysis: With George Kittle (groin) missing the season opener, Tyler Kroft got the start at tight end (one catch for nine yards) and Dwelley backed him up. Neither player made a fantasy impact, and that should remain the same even if Kittle is unable to suit up for a Week 2 matchup against Seattle.

Returning to 49ers
Dwelley signed a one-year contract to return to the 49ers on Monday.
Analysis: Dwelley wasn't particularly involved in San Francisco's offensive scheme in 2021, as he logged only 185 snaps with the unit. However, he remained a key part of the special-teams group. He should maintain the latter role, but he could also move up the tight end depth chart if either George Kittle or Charlie Woerner suffers an injury.

Finishes year as third TE
Dwelley had four receptions for 51 yards and a touchdown across 17 games during the 2021 regular season.
Analysis: Dwelley was usurped by Charlie Woerner as the primary backup behind George Kittle, resulting in barely any usage offensively. The 26-year-old will be an unrestricted free agent this upcoming offseason, but he is unlikely to land anywhere that provides fantasy value in 2022.

Falls to second on depth chart
Dwelley had one reception (two targets) for five yards in Sunday's 30-18 loss to the Colts.
Analysis: Charlie Woerner (30 snaps) officially got the start for the first time this season, but Dwelley stuck around as "co-starter" with 27 offensive snaps logged (48 percent). The former is the more athletic option -- as evidenced by his greater production with the same amount of targets -- but neither is really a fantasy option at this point. The tight end duo will fill in for George Kittle (calf) for at least one more game while the star mends on IR.

Catches both targets
Dwelley caught two of two targets for 25 yards against Arizona on Sunday.
Analysis: Dwelley wasn't anywhere near as prominent in the passing game as the injured George Kittle (calf) typically is, but there's nothing surprising about that. Kittle can't be imitated, of course, and Dwelley had only one target in 2021 before drawing two Sunday. He'll need to play more as long as Kittle is out, but he likely has fantasy appeal only in deep fantasy formats.

Added opportunities with Kittle on IR
With George Kittle (calf) having landed on IR, Dwelley is in line to head the 49ers' tight end corps for the team's next three games.
Analysis: Kittle is reportedly likely to return from IR when he's eligible, but for the 49ers' next three games, Dwelley is in line to see added snaps and targets, with Charlie Woerner and Tanner Hudson in the mix on that front as well. Though Dwelley can't be expected to approach Kittle's level of production, he's nonetheless an option for those scrambling for fantasy tight end depth for the next few weeks.

Likely to start for Kittle
Dwelley is expected to start at tight end and see an uptick in snaps Sunday against the Cardinals with George Kittle (calf) listed as doubtful for the game.
Analysis: Kittle has been sidelined for only a handful of plays through the 49ers' first four games, leaving few reps left over for Dwelley and Charlie Woerner, the two reserve options at tight end. Neither player can come close to matching Kittle's impact as a pass catcher, but Dwelley projects as the more fantasy friendly option of the two, given that he's drawn 25 targets in 20 games over the past season and change compared to just four for Woerner. First catch goes for a score
Dwelley caught his lone target for a 21-yard touchdown in Sunday's 28-21 loss to the Seahawks.
Analysis: Dwelley got the scoring going on a seam route where he boxed out his assignment and corralled the pass for a touchdown. It was the backup tight end's first catch (and target) through four games, which emphasizes his role -- or lack thereof -- on offense while George Kittle is active.

Inks extension
Dwelley signed a one-year extension with San Francisco on Friday.
Analysis: Following three solid seasons in San Francisco to start his career, Dwelley has demonstrated enough to earn an extension. Sees limited action as backup
Dwelley finished with 19 receptions for 245 yards and a touchdown with the 49ers in 2020.
Analysis: The 25-year-old began the year third on the depth chart behind star tight end George Kittle and newly acquired veteran Jordan Reed. Dwelley still saw an increase in both playing time (500 offensive snaps) and production after the rest of the tight end room dealt with injuries at various points during the season. Racks up 28 yards vs. Dallas
Dwelley caught both of his targets for 28 yards in Sunday's 41-33 loss to the Cowboys.
Analysis: Dwelley continues to start games for San Francisco while George Kittle (foot) remains on IR. The 25-year-old logged 46 offensive snaps (55 percent) compared to backup tight end Jordan Reed's 42 (50 percent), but the latter saw three extra targets and caught a touchdown pass. Reed is the more desirable fantasy asset due to his superior receiving capabilities, but neither is a must-start in standard fantasy formats heading into a Week 16 matchup with the Cardinals.

Dwelley secured both of his targets for 20 yards in Sunday's 23-15 loss to Washington.
Analysis: Dwelley started and logged 36 offensive snaps (44 percent) compared to co-starter Jordan Reed's 33 snaps (41 percent). The 25-year-old finished with the most receiving yards of his position group for the first time since Week 9, highlighting his preferred usage as a blocker. Dwelley should continue to start in place of George Kittle, who remains sidelined with a foot injury, but Reed has the higher fantasy upside heading into Sunday's contest with the Cowboys.

Secures both targets
Dwelley caught both his targets for 29 yards during Monday's 34-24 loss to the Bills.
Analysis: Dwelley has played at least 50 percent of the offensive snaps in each of the past five games, and he has eight catches for 122 yards and one touchdown during that stretch. The 25-year-old should continue to see consistent playing time down the stretch, though Jordan Reed is clearly the preferred tight end in the passing game.

Dwelley had one reception (two targets) for 22 yards in Sunday's 27-13 loss to the Saints.
Analysis: Dwelley got another start in George Kittle's (foot) extended absence, but he was primarily used as a blocker while fellow tight end Jordan Reed (five receptions for 62 yards) ran more routes despite playing six fewer snaps. Solid performance in loss
Dwelley secured all three targets for 52 yards in the 49ers' 34-17 loss to the Packers on Thursday night. He also returned one kickoff for 20 yards.
Analysis: With George Kittle (foot) out, Dwelley served as the primary tight end even with Jordan Reed (knee) also being activated from injured reserve for the contest. The third-year tight end finished a distant second in receptions and receiving yards to Richie James, who exploded for a career-best 9-184-1 line. Kittle could well be out for the remainder of the regular season, so Dwelley could retain a solid role in a Week 10 battle against the Saints on Sunday, Nov. 15 while sharing snaps with Reed.

Analysis: The third-year tight end saw some extra opportunity with Jordan Reed (knee/ankle) leaving the game on two separate occasions, the second time for good in the second half. Analysis: Although Jordan Reed dominated the production in George Kittle's (knee) stead, Dwelley recorded a 64 percent snap share Sunday. Dwelley's fantasy impact is nonexistent as long as Reed is around, but he could have another decent workload on tap Sunday versus the Giants if Kittle sits out.

Analysis: The 49ers were also without Jordan Reed for at least the portion of practice open to the media, although a lack of a specific injury designation might just mean a day of rest for the veteran. Dwelley is expected to compete with Reed for time in two tight-end sets alongside George Kittle.

Role uncertain in 2020
It's unclear how Dwelley will be used with the signing of Jordan Reed this offseason.
Analysis: Dwelley proved effective as both a blocker and backup tight end behind George Kittle in 2019, finishing with 91 yards and two scores on 15 receptions. The signing of Reed complicates the 25-year-old's role heading into the 2020 campaign. Dwelley is a superior run blocker, which could keep him on the field in certain heavy packages, but if Reed can stay on the field (a big "if"), then Dwelley will see his already low target share reduced even further.

Officially back with 49ers
Dwelley inked his one-year contract offer from San Francisco on Tuesday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The 25-year-old was tendered by the team earlier this month and has now officially signed his deal. Dwelley is expected to handle the No. 2 tight end role behind Pro Bowler George Kittle in 2020.

Sticking in Bay Area
The 49ers tendered Dwelley to a one-year contract Thursday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Dwelley was a solid contributor as the team's backup tight end in 2019, hauling in 15 of 22 targets for 91 yards and two scores. The 25-year-old performed admirably behind No. 1 tight end George Kittle last season, especially when Kittle missed two games due to injury, and Dwelley is expected to assume a similar role in 2020.

Two scores in limited role
Dwelley finished with 15 receptions (22 targets) for 91 yards and two touchdowns in 2019.
Analysis: Dwelley won the backup tight end job out of training camp, and he was able to find the end zone twice while filling in for starter George Kittle. The latter gets banged up frequently, but also has a high tolerance for pain and has missed the minimum amount of games through is impressive three-year career, leaving scraps for other tight ends on the roster when active. The 49ers have exclusive rights to Dwelley this upcoming offseason, and it would be surprising if they passed up on the…read more

Big play on lone reception
Dwelley caught his only target for 25 yards in Saturday's 34-31 win over the Rams.
Analysis: Jimmy Garoppolo connected with Dwelley for a big gain in the fourth quarter to extend a drive that ultimately led to a touchdown pass to starting tight end George Kittle. It was the only offensive action Dwelley would receive, and he was only on the field for two offensive snaps. Both he and fellow backup tight end, Levine Toilolo, combined for just 10 snaps on offense, and neither carries fantasy value while Kittle is healthy and terrorizing opposing defenses.

Quickly falls out of favor
Dwelley did not receive a target in Sunday's 37-8 win over Green Bay.
Analysis: Fresh off a two-touchdown performance, Dwelley not only took a back seat to returning starter George Kittle (knee/ankle), but he also finished well behind Garrett Celek in terms of offensive snaps. The 24-year-old will maintain a non-fantasy role so long as Kittle is healthy for Week 13's tilt against Baltimore.

Grabs two short TDs in comeback win
Dwelley caught four of five targets for 14 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 36-26 win over the Cardinals.
Analysis: Getting another start in place of George Kittle (knee), Dwelley took advantage of a matchup with the weakest defense in the league against tight ends and caught TD passes of four and five yards -- the first two of Jimmy Garoppolo's four touchdowns on the day. While he isn't the downfield threat Kittle is, Dwelley is proving he can be a useful short-yardage and red-zone threat, but his snap count and target volume in Week 12 against the Packers will depend entirely on Kittle's health.

Likely to replace Kittle again
Dwelley could be in line for significant snaps in Sunday's game against the Cardinals with George Kittle (knee/ankle) listed as doubtful for the contest.
Analysis: Dwelley filled in for Kittle in Monday's 27-24 loss to Seattle, catching three of seven targets for 24 yards while playing 92 percent of the offensive snaps. The Niners could give some of that playing time to Garrett Celek or Levine Toilolo in Week 11, but Dwelley remains the better bet to draw targets.

Makes three grabs
Dwelley caught three of seven targets for 24 yards in Monday night's 27-24 overtime loss to the Seahawks.
Analysis: Dwelley started at tight end with Pro Bowler George Kittle (knee/ankle) sidelined. Although he unsurprisingly couldn't come close to Kittle's production, Dwelley still drew seven targets, finishing third on the team in the category. With back-to-back games with at least three grabs, Dwelley could be in store for similar production should Kittle sit again versus the Cardinals in Week 11, making his status worthwhile to monitor prior to kickoff.

Starting role on tap
Dwelley should see the lion's share of snaps Monday against Seattle with starting tight end George Kittle (knee/ankle) listed as doubtful.
Analysis: Dwelley played 70 percent of offensive snaps in last week's win over the Cardinals -- a game in which Kittle was banged up but still toughed out 69 percent of snaps. With Kittle likely sitting this one out, Dwelley should see the field even more and has a chance to match or surpass his four-catch output from Week 9.

Largest usage this season
Dwelley caught four passes (four targets) for 29 yards in Thursday's 28-25 win over the Cardinals.
Analysis: Dwelley was on the field for 70 percent of the team's offensive snaps, which was due in large part to George Kittle suffering a knee injury early on, limiting the starter to a season-low 69 percent of offensive snaps. The latter was able to play through the injury, and an MRI on Friday revealed that there was no structural damage, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Even with the career-best game Thursday, Dwelley would need Kittle to completely miss a contest before gaining fantasy…read more
